The Social Distancing Weekly: April 10, 2020
It's the long weekend! What does that mean, again?
These are strange times, so strange that we're even tackling it in our dreams, according to this sleep researcher.
That's why it's nice to take it easy on yourself, find some joy in cat videos, take a peek at what people are up to around the world, and learn some things that can make you feel more secure in yourself, your neighbours and your city.
We're excited to create another opportunity to do good with a "pay it forward" model on our virtual screenings. For every ticket sold, we will donate two tickets to Paradise Theatre to front-line workers, when we re-open. More details below.
Today, we have resources on:
- Movies at home
- Cat videos for all
- Virtual tourism
- How we support each other
- Food to your door
Movies at home:
National Film Board
The NFB has a massive collection of docs and animated shorts available for free online. Norm Wilner of Now has compiled an ace list of what to see.
Virtual Paradise Theatre, in support of front-line workers.
Just announced: When you buy a ticket through Virtual Paradise Theatre, you're also giving two tickets to front-line workers (or rather, heroes!) to enjoy a well-deserved escape to Paradise when we re-open. More info.
Paradise audiences are loving this "informative and kooky documentary offers nothing less than a model for planetary survival" (New York Times).
"A warm and inviting Comfort Food Movie" (Chicago Sun-Times). Just what we need!
And we're delighted to continue offering:
Cats, now more than ever:
This bonanza compilation reel is usually an in-cinema exclusive. We're delighted to present this 45-minute treat featuring the best of the best.
Quarantine Cat Film Festival
We're joining cinemas across North America in a public request for your cat videos—to support indie cinemas!
The Coachella music festival isn't happening this year, so they're bringing a documentary with 20 years' worth of performances to YouTube this weekend.
Easter in the Duomo
Opera icon Andrea Bocelli will perform in a livestreamed Easter Sunday concert from the Duomo cathedral in Milan.
Mikhailovsky Theatre ballet
Discover "self-isolation ballet" performed by Mikhailovsky Theatre dancers at home.
How we support each other:
As part of the city's new mental health strategy, Toronto residents can now call 2-1-1 to be connected to a mental health service partner for direct phone support.
Sing-athon Across Canada
Choir!Choir!Choir! hosts a virtual "sing-athon" in support of the Canadian Cancer Society Daffodil Campaign on Saturday.
Learn how to protect yourself and others when using shared washer and dryer facilities with this handy print-out.
Across Toronto, hyper-local groups are forming, connecting neighbours to help protect the most vulnerable.
Food to your door:
Dufferin Grove Farmers Market
Our local farmers market is now an online shop with the same great vendors, and a very user-friendly interface!
The Good Food Box
Support food security charity FoodShare, and get a box of fresh, locally-grown produce to your door.
Our friends at the other Paradise on Bloor St have their excellent selection of beer and wine available for delivery across Ontario!
Happy Coffee and Wine
Only imbibe delicious things with this delightful selection of coffee and wine.
