THE PARADISE PRESENTS: "All the World's a Stage!" Eight films about the players...
About this event
" All the world’s a stage, And all the men and women merely players; They have their exits and their entrances; And one man in his time plays many parts..." -William Shakespeare
This June at the Paradise Theatre, we are celebrating the theatre itself! Join us as we journey through centuries' worth of theatrical traditions from across the globe with eight unique films that observe the hallowed art of performance. For this screening, we're shining a light on one of the less vaunted players in the theatre as we show Ken Russell's delightful musical THE BOY FRIEND the story of the assistant stage manager who is forced to understudy for the leading lady!
"You're going out there a youngster, but you've got to come back a star!"1960s superstar fashion model Twiggy and Broadway dancing star Tommy Tune headline Ken Russel's lovingly comic homage to the Hollywood musicals of the 1930s in The Boy Friend. When the star of an English stage musical twists her ankle seconds before the curtain goes up, shy, young assistant stage manager Polly (Twiggy) takes her place. Now, the show goes on as Polly sings and dances her way through a kaleidoscope of psychedelic interpretations of choreographer Busby Berkeley's classic musical numbers. While an audience watches, Polly finds love and stardom before the curtain comes down on The Boy Friend. Academy Award nomination for Best Music, Scoring Adaptation and Original Song Score. Golden Globe Award for Best Motion Picture Actress - Musical/Comedy (Twiggy). Based on the stage musical by Sandy Wilson.
