PARADISE THEATRE PRESENTS- Going to the Chapel: Weddings on Screen

About this event

What is summer in the city without the blistering heat, day trips to the Islands, and the customary weekend nuptial? For centuries weddings have been bringing people together and tearing them apart, so this July at the Paradise Theatre you are cordially invited to celebrate with us as we present seven unique on-screen unions. Let us gather together and experience traditions old, new, borrowed, and blue... Our next stop is post-war Japan with modernist master Yashujirō Ozu's aching portrait of familial love and despair. From 1949, we present LATE SPRING.

One of the most powerful of Yasujiro Ozu’s family portraits, Late Spring (Banshun) tells the story of a widowed father who feels compelled to marry off his beloved only daughter. Eminent Ozu players Chishu Ryu and Setsuko Hara command this poignant tale of love and loss in postwar Japan, which remains as potent today as ever—and a strong justification for its maker’s inclusion in the pantheon of cinema’s greatest directors.
