Based on Theodore Dreiser's novel An American Tragedy, A Place in the Sun, tells the story of a working class man whose desire to ascend the social ladder leads him to wreak havoc on the lives around him. After taking a low level job at his welathy uncle's factory, George Eastman (Montgomery Clift) begins dating one of the factory girls, Alice Tripp (Shelley Winters). However, while straddling class lines, George meets the beautiful socialite Angela Vickers (Elizabeth Taylor). George's affairs come to a boiling point when Alice announces a secret that will seal his fate.
