PARADISE presents THE HEARTBREAK KID

THE HEARTBREAK KID (1972)

“My marriage to him was as willful an act as I have ever committed; I married him against all the evidence. I married him believing that marriage doesn't work, that love dies, that passion fades, and in so doing I became the kind of romantic only a cynic is truly capable of being.”

-Nora Ephron, Heartburn

THIS JUNE: We’re starting the summer with an equal dose of heartache and hilarity as we celebrate the cynicism at the heart of all romance. Join us as we laugh our way through love lost with seven rom-coms in reverse! The Paradise Presents: BREAKING UP… (is hard to do).

A HIP, HOT AND SEXY LESSON IN LOVE. The Paradise Theatre is thrilled to present a new preservation of Elaine May's 1972 comedic masterpiece THE HEARTBREAK KID. Long out of print, this rare screening will be the Toronto premiere of a glorious 2K scan of the film courtesy of film historian and collector Elizabeth Purchell.

In her sophomore directorial effort, Elaine May brings her acidic wit and deft understanding on male psychology to Neil Simon's hilarious screenplay. After a whirlwind courtship, shallow and egotistical Lenny (played to perfection by Charles Grodin) weds the painfully earnest Lila (played by Elaine May's daughter Jeannie Berlin in an Oscar-nominated turn). During their honeymoon in Miami Beach, Lenny becomes enamored with Kelly Corcoran (Cybill Shepherd) a college girl on holiday with her wealthy parents. What ensues, is a masterclass of cringe comedy as Lenny attempts to untangle himself from his predicament without breaking too many hearts along the way.
