“My marriage to him was as willful an act as I have ever committed; I married him against all the evidence. I married him believing that marriage doesn't work, that love dies, that passion fades, and in so doing I became the kind of romantic only a cynic is truly capable of being.”
-Nora Ephron, Heartburn
THIS JUNE: We’re starting the summer with an equal dose of heartache and hilarity as we celebrate the cynicism at the heart of all romance. Join us as we laugh our way through love lost with seven rom-coms in reverse! The Paradise Presents: BREAKING UP… (is hard to do).
ROBERT WAS MADLY IN LOVE WITH MARY. MARY WAS MADLY IN LOVE WITH HIM. UNDER THE CIRCUMSTANCES THEY DID THE ONLY THING THEY COULD DO ... THEY BROKE UP. After the release of 1981's comedic masterpiece MODERN ROMANCE, writer/director/star Albert Brooks received a call from none other than Stanley Kubrick proclaiming: "This is a brilliant movie – the movie I’ve always wanted to make about jealousy." Join us for our special presentation of the painfully funny and painfully profound film that closes out our series.
Robert Cole, a film editor, is constantly breaking up with and reconciling with long-suffering girlfriend Mary. He is irrationally jealous and self-centred, while Mary has been too willing to let him get away with his disruptive antics.
