GIANT (1956)

"I figure if a girl wants to be a legend, she should go ahead and be one."

-Calamity Jane

THIS MARCH- We're celebrating the legendary gals from the genre of legends. The Paradise Presents: WOMEN OF THE WEST- classic and neo Westerns with women at the centre. From Marlene Dietrich as the spunky saloon singer in DESTRY RIDES AGAIN, to modern master of the genre Kelly Reichardt's MEEK'S CUTOFF. Grab your boots and lasso and journey across the frontier and beyond the horizon to Paradise!

THE LEGENDARY EPIC THAT'S AS BIG AS TEXAS! We can't have a Western series without an old-fashioned Hollywood epic, and it doesn't get more epic than George Stevens' GIANT. Three generations of land-rich Texans love, swagger, connive and clash in this 1956 masterwork starring Rock Hudson, James Dean, and in one of her finest lead performances Elizabeth Taylor. Told from the point of view of Taylor's Leslie Benedict, her performance breaks through the grandeur to become the soul of the film.

Wealthy Texas rancher Bick Benedict (Rock Hudson) shakes things up at home when he returns from a trip to the East Coast with a love interest, the refined Leslie Lynnton (Elizabeth Taylor). Bick and Leslie get married, but she clashes with his sister, Luz (Mercedes McCambridge), and wins the admiration of the ambitious young Jett Rink (James Dean). Bick and Jett form a tense rivalry that continues to surface as the years pass and fortunes change in this sweeping drama.
