The Paradise is thrilled to partner with the Toronto Film Society to bring classics to the big screen! TFS is one of Canada’s oldest film appreciation groups. It was originally formed to meet the demand for Canadian and international forgotten, banned, independent, and fringe sound and silent films, and to support their preservation and restoration.
Casque d'Or / Golden Helmet (1952) & Crin-Blanc: Le cheval sauvage / White Mane: The Wild Horse (1953)
The era of the Parisian Belle Époque is brought to vivid life in this classic French romantic drama from director Jacques Becker. Actress Simone Signoret shines in this tale of an ill-fated love affair. Despite the story's tragic overtones, this is a film of unusual beauty, with brilliant art direction that truly evokes a bygone time. For lovers of European and French cinema, catch this classic masterpiece while you can.
To accompany Casque d'Or, we are featuring a screening of the award-winning 1953 short film Crin-Blanc: Le cheval sauvage, directed by Albert Lamorisse (The Red Balloon). The fantastical story of a young boy who befriends a wild white stallion in the marshes of Camargue, France is a captivating and timeless experience for young and old alike, and remains a classic of French cinema.
