The Paradise is thrilled to partner with the Toronto Film Society to bring classics to the big screen! TFS is one of Canada’s oldest film appreciation groups. It was originally formed to meet the demand for Canadian and international forgotten, banned, independent, and fringe sound and silent films, and to support their preservation and restoration.
Ealing Studios arguably reached its peak with this wonderfully hilarious and macabre comedy that has become a staple on lists of the greatest British films ever made. Alec Guinness leads a group of quirky criminals who plan a high-stakes bank robbery under the nose of an unsuspecting landlady who becomes an unwitting accomplice to the caper. Along the way, the film brilliantly blends the sinister with the absurd, thanks to a sharp-witted script, sure-footed direction, and a terrific supporting cast of British comic stalwarts including Cecil Parker, Herbert Lom, and Peter Sellers. A must watch!
The afternoon includes a live introduction to the film, a door prize (or two!), some specially selected shorts, and the feature. We expect the programme to last approximately 2 hours.
