Republic of Venice, 1760. Pursued by a vengeful husband, the intrepid womanizer Casanova, who symbolizes the decline of the city and its fall into debauchery, manages to escape and, by a circuitous route, arrives in Saint Petersburg, where he will be involved in the many plots that threaten the throne of Czar Peter III…

A flamboyant spectacle of sexual bravado, innuendo, humour and intrigue. Shot on spectacular locations in the Austrian Alps and Venice, the dashing star, Russian émigré Ivan Mosjoukine, plays the infamous 18th Century lover, sword fighter, gambler and adventurer with all the aplomb of the actual man. Casanova’s been called the “fresco of fabulous settings and rococo costumes knitted together with scenes of sumptuous corruption.” Beautifully restored, complete with coloured sequences of the Venetian Carnival, the film fully embraces Casanova’s quote “be the flame, not the moth” -TORONTO SILENT FILM FESTIVAL

This screening is part of Flesh & The Devil: a film series exploring the scandalous, controversial, erotic and exotic films of the 1920s. Presented by Toronto Silent Film Festival.
