When investigative reporter Irwin “Fletch” Fletcher goes undercover to write a piece on the drug trade at a local beach, he’s approached by wealthy businessman Alan Stanwyk, who offers him $50,000 to murder him. With sarcastic wit and a knack for disguises, Fletch sets out to uncover Stanwyk’s story.
Based on Gregory McDonald’s popular mystery novels, Michael Ritchie’s FLETCH is a breezy satire on classic LA noir, with a distinctly 1980s sensibility. Our sardonic and cynical lead, undercover Los Angeles Times crime report Irwin “Fletch” Fletcher, is portrayed by Chevy Chase at an apex of his film career. A decade after his tenure as an original cast member on Saturday Night Live, Chase was able to find his sweet spot as a leading man- perfectly channeling his brash wit in to an appealing protagonist. In many ways FLETCH is the kind of film designed for a lazy Sunday afternoon rewatch- modest but precise in its ambitions, and never taking itself more seriously than it ought to. Through Chase’s offhand adlibs and Ritchie’s relaxed direction, FLETCH manages to make a tight 98 minute crime serial feel refreshingly uninhibited. – LUCY WALKER
