People battling to the death in a seemingly endless wasteland searching for the Embodiment of Angst.
Beginning in medias res on Episode 20 of an already fully-realized and pre-serialized script, director Terry Chiu throws you crotch-deep into his post-apocalyptic, anarcho-punk wasteland of a vision. What follows is a three-hour DIY odyssey of truly epic proportions—possibly the greatest piece of outsider art ever conceived.
Remediated from the taxonomic lineage of nerdy online media that traces both backwards through PINK GUY and forwards from NEON GENESIS EVANGELION, director Chiu’s taps into an uncharted territory of new sincerity in our post-ironic cinematic landscape. His visual antics shock with the grotesque freneticism of someone like Shinya Tsukamoto, while subtler moments tap into the spirituality and pure playfulness of someone like King Hu, suburban Montreal rendered by Chiu with the same veneration as Hu does the misty mountains of Taiwan.
The film is hard-subbed in both English and Traditional Chinese: English to assist you in acclimating to its esoteric dialogue, and Traditional Chinese as to allow it access to Terry’s home community in Montreal’s Chinatown. I like that a lot.
OPEN DOOM CRESCENDO is to punk cinema as THE VELVET UNDERGROUND AND NICO is to punk music. The few who allow it into their hearts will have infinite fuel to create for years to come. This type of outsider art, this shit right here, is what is going to save cinema (and possibly the world). How shitty is your soul? -EASTERN PROMISES
