The Second Paradise Book Club is all about The Second Mrs. De Winter, as we screen Alfred Hitchcock’s masterful adaptation of Daphne Du Maurier’s gothic classic REBECCA with an introductory discussion by series hosts Kevin Greenspan and Claire Foster. A whirlwind romance with widower Maxim De Winter (Laurence Olivier) brings a young woman (Joan Fontaine) to the imposing estate of Manderley, where the presence of Rebecca, Maxim’s first wife, looms large years after her mysterious death. Translating the exquisitely suffocating atmosphere of DuMaurier’s novel to the screen, Hitchcock’s first American film is also one of his finest blends of suspense, romance, and tragedy. -KEVIN GREENSPAN
