When British Railways announce the closure of the Titfield to Mallingford branch line a group of local residents make a bid to run it themselves, backed by a monied member of the community who is attracted by the complete lack of licensing hours on trains. Unfortunately the local bus company starts to use methods that can hardly be seen as fair competition.

Ealing Studios once again strikes comedy gold with this whimsical tale about the sleepy village of Titfield whose inhabitants, upon learning that their railway line is being shut down, step into action. Led by the enthusiastic Reverend Weech (George Relph) and wealthy railway enthusiast Mr. Valentine (Stanley Holloway), they acquire an old steam locomotive to run the service themselves. But when a rival bus company plots to sabotage their efforts, the villagers must fight to keep their dream alive.

Directed by the legendary Charles Crichton, this heartwarming tale features the trademark eccentric characters, spirited cast, and clever wit once expects from Ealing, brought to life in stunning Technicolor! -TORONTO FILM SOCIETY
