A history of mankind’s interactions with Niagara Falls, from initial awe, to harnessing of the Falls’ power, which leads to the destruction of nearby areas like Love Canal.
Desire in Motion is celebrating its one-year anniversary on National Canadian Film Day with a 35th anniversary screening of THE FALLS (1991). This screening will be followed by an in-person Q&A with director Kevin McMahon and more special guests!
THE FALLS, the debut feature film by Kevin McMahon, is a sprawling journey about all things related to Niagara Falls. The film’s ethereal nature and gorgeous cinematography by Douglas Koch (who recently worked on David Cronenberg’s THE SHROUDS and CRIMES OF THE FUTURE) makes it a breathtaking spectacle, just like the waterfalls themselves. The film’s eclectic score by Kurt Swinghammer was notably sampled on Boards of Canada’s album Geogaddi. A new mythology emerges over the course of the film, presenting the natural wonder as the ultimate convergence of divine power and a symbolic representation of all that is good and bad in this world. THE FALLS sees Niagara Falls as a microcosm of our world that outwardly shows us all that is beautiful and ugly about our own impulses and desires. -JACOB CREPEAULT
