The Paradise Presents … THE SUMMER SESSIONS. Join us in July and August as we explore musical styles and modes of performance in film. This screening series is split into two parts- each chronicling the distinctive cinematic language of a genre, and each featuring a special presentation of BAND AND A MOVIE- pairing a film in the series with a live performance from a local musical act! Throughout the summer we will be paying tribute to the transcendental work of documentary filmmaker Les Blank- known for his vivid portraits of traditional musicians. Selected screenings will be preceded by a Les Blank short relating to the month’s genre.
Join us on Friday August 16th for this month’s edition of BAND AND A MOVIE featuring a special presentation of Questlove’s Academy-Award winning documentary SUMMER OF SOUL (…OR, WHEN THE REVOLUTION COULD NOT BE TELEVISED) preceded by a live performance from RDC: Bank of Funk!
RDC bank of funk is a power trio consisting of members Rashad Walters, Devon Goping (who will be covered for this gig by good friend Sandy Murphy), and Corey Weinberg. The idea behind said trio was to have funk/hip-hop based instrumentals and songs that were adjusted to the small group size and made to have fun playing!(and listening) We span from the hip hop material of J Dilla, MF Doom, and Common to funk fusion of Mono Neon and lettuce, all the way to classic rock such as queen and The Edgar Winter Group! A fun, funky, adaptable trio for any event!
During the same summer as Woodstock, over 300,000 people attended the Harlem Cultural Festival, celebrating African American music and culture, and promoting Black pride and unity. The footage from the festival sat in a basement, unseen for over 50 years, keeping this incredible event in America’s history lost—until now.
