The Window/Black Angel
The Paradise is thrilled to partner with the Toronto Film Society to bring classics to the big screen! TFS is one of Canada’s oldest film appreciation groups. It was originally formed in 1948 to meet the demand for Canadian and international forgotten, banned, independent, and fringe sound and silent films, and to support their preservation and restoration.
The Toronto Film Society presents a double feature at one low price!
The Window (1949)
There’s tension and suspense to spare in this nail-biting classic that would have made Hitchcock proud. Young Tommy Woodry has a habit of crying wolf, so when he witnesses a real murder, neither his parents nor the police believe him. As Tommy realizes he’s the next target, he must evade the killers and convince others of the danger he faces. The gripping, stylish direction, and the film’s authentic New York locations add to the tense, gritty atmosphere of this underrated gem. If you haven’t seen it yet, what are you waiting for? 73 minutes.
Black Angel (1946)
Welcome to 1940s Los Angeles, where illicit affairs, femmes fatale, and shady characters lie directly underneath the city’s sunny façade. When glamorous singer Mavis Marlowe is found murdered, one of her lovers is falsely accused of the crime and sentence to death. His wife sets out to clear his name with the help of Mavis’ former beau, leading to a journey against the clock through L.A.’s underbelly to uncover the truth. With compelling performances, atmospheric cinematography, and captivating plot twists, this underappreciated gem is worth rediscovering! 81 minutes.
There will be a brief introduction and door prize giveaway, followed by the first film. The second film will be shown after a 10-15 minute intermission. We expect the event to end at approximately 10 pm.
